Currently, nuclear power plants are banned in KY until the federal gov't has a long-
term storage facility for the most radioactive wastes -- deadly for at least
250,000 years. No such facility exists, yet the KY Senate passed a bill to allow
nukes anyway. It will now go to the KY House.
Nuclear power's economics are so bad that not even Wall St has been willing to
take the gamble — despite huge federal subsidies. Even if it were, those sums
would be better invested into durable improvements in energy efficiency—the
cheapest, cleanest and fastest available “energy source”—that would create good
jobs across the commonwealth and reduce utilities bills for the long-term future.

The Kentucky General Assembly is now in session.

Rep. Jim Gooch, a denialist member of the coal industry, and eight other state
reps, have sponsored the outrageous House Joint Resolution 20, which says:
"No office, department, institution, agency, or political subdivision of
state government shall enact or enforce any federal, state, or local
law, regulation, ordinance, or executive order that limits, regulates, or
controls the emission of carbon dioxide."
Gooch is also sponsoring HR 132, which urges Congress to block the EPA from
regulating greenhouse gases emitted from large sources, such as power plants.
This resolution passed, 76-16, on the House floor on Feb 23rd. LCAN will
update this page when it goes before the Senate, asking you to urge its
members to Vote NO on HJR 20 and HR 132.
