Currently, nuclear power plants are banned in KY until the federal gov't
has a functioning depository for long-term storage of the plants' highly
radioactive wastes -- expected to be deadly for at least 250,000 years.
However, the Kentucky Senate will vote, possibly today, on a bill that
would allow nukes, even though no such storage facility still does not
exists! The Louisville CAN steering committee sent the following letter
to all state senators, urging them to vote NO on Senate Bill 26:
The high-level radioactive waste generated by nuclear power plants
will be extremely dangerous for at least 250,000 years. We
believe that imposing such a burden onto so many future generations
would be immoral.
Besides, the economics of nuclear power are so bad that for
decades not even Wall Street has been willing to take the gamble—
despite huge federal subsidies. Even if it were, the huge sums that
would be spent on building a nuclear power plant and managing its
waste could instead be invested into durable improvements in
energy efficiency—the cheapest, cleanest and fastest available
“energy source”—that would create good jobs across the
commonwealth and reduce utilities bills for the long-term future.
You can weigh in, too. The more voices, the better.
